Free training courses in key energy topics
Following the success of our first Energy Training Week in 2011, and in response to numerous requests for IEA training, we are pleased to announce the next international training activity that offers free* energy courses specifically aimed at professionals in developing countries and emerging economies.
Connect with world-class energy experts: this highly interactive training event is delivered by a large team of IEA experts who will take participants through a rich mixture of focussed lectures, practical exercises and field trips. Several renowned guest lecturers will also contribute to making the training a rich professional experience. Participants from up to 50 countries are expected to attend and there will be many opportunities for networking and knowledge sharing.
Take away the latest energy knowledge: training content will focus on the latest trends and developments in a range of energy sectors. Participants will become familiar with the theory behind and the application of the IEA’s internationally recognised models and tools.
Choose from a range of courses – both advanced and introductory level**: a diverse and integrated programme has been designed for each course covering the latest developments and best practices. There is an opportunity to focus on energy security, markets, sustainability, technology and analysis, or to experience a mixture of the “hot topics” of the energy world.

- Two preparatory courses offer an introduction to some key energy topics such as Energy Security and Energy Sustainability
The training week, which will be held at the IEA headquarters in Paris, targets government officials and private sector experts from non-IEA countries and is designed to accommodate 100 participants.
*Attendance is free of charge. Participants must cover their own travel and accommodation costs. Limited financial assistance is available from the IEA.
** Participants can take one advanced 5-day course and (optional) one preparatory 2-day course. All courses will be in English (no interpretation in another language will be provided)

Advanced courses (5 days) - outline descriptions
| 1. Energy Essentials for Decision Makers (with a special focus on sustainable energy options) |
A mixture of key energy topics are discussed for the benefit of experienced managers and policy-makers with broader responsibilities and interests. The course will offer a strong combination of the latest energy developments internationally and some innovative practical tools for designing policy interventions and planning technology deployment. Particular attention will be given to sustainable and low-carbon energy options (energy efficiency, renewables).
This course is suitable for professionals with a background in energy policy and management and at least three years of work experience in this area. The training will benefit both relevant government officials and experts from the private sector.

| 2. Energy Markets and Security |
A range of important issues regarding oil and gas market trends and prices, supply disruption and response, and market regulation will be explored. Particular attention will be given to natural gas as a fuel which contributes to the security and flexibility of national and international energy systems. The course has a very strong practical experience approach, and includes a simulation exercise of an oil supply disruption and a site visit to oil and gas facilities.
This course is suitable for professionals with a background in oil and gas markets and energy security policy, and some work experience in this area. The training will benefit both relevant government officials and experts from the private sector.

The programme will cover energy efficiency best practice and interventions across the entire economy and discuss some sector-specific options – buildings, industry, transport and other sectors. A range of case studies from around the world will be presented, and the course also offers concrete policy development tools, group problem-solving exercises and site visits.
This course is suitable for professionals with a background or interest in energy efficiency and some work experience in this area. The training will benefit both relevant government officials and experts from the private sector.

| 4. Renewable and Low-Carbon Energy Technology |
This theme will explore the key principles of policy formulation for renewable energy planning and low-carbon technology deployment. It uses the IEA’s unique expertise in developing energy technology roadmaps – a methodology that encompasses the policy objectives, stakeholder engagement, and financial incentives needed to support a particular technology. A range of renewable energy technologies are covered, as well as the issues of portfolio management, grid integration, and smart grids.
This course is suitable for professionals with a background in renewable energy, low-carbon technology or climate policy, and some substantial work experience in any of these areas. The training will benefit both relevant government officials and experts from the private sector.

| 5. Energy Analysis and Modelling |
A close look is given to a range of practical IEA energy analysis applications – from developing energy efficiency indicators to modelling a national power generation portfolio. Participants are introduced to the fundamental principles of energy analysis and modelling and then receive hands-on training on using tools such as the international TIMES power optimisation model and the MOMO transport model. Analysis at the national level, as well as by sector of the economy, are explored from both short and long-term perspectives. Computer-based exercises are included.
This course is suitable for energy policy analysts and modellers dealing with energy performance indicators, fuel mix analysis, scenario development and power generation planning (some work experience in this area is required). The training will benefit employees in government departments and private sector companies involved in energy analysis and modelling.
