Energy Projections

The IEA publishes medium- and long-term energy projections through to 2030 in the Agency’s flagship publication, World Energy Outlook. The latest edition, World Energy Outlook 2008, focuses on two pressing issues facing the energy sector today:
  • Are world oil and gas supplies under threat? A hard look is taken at future global oil and gas supply through an analysis of 800 of the world’s largest oilfields
  • How could a new international accord on stabilising greenhouse-gas emissions affect global energy markets? Ground breaking analysis will enable policymakers make choices as they strive to agree on a post-Kyoto climate framework
World Energy Outlook 2007 focused on China and India, by answering the following questions about the world’s fastest growing energy markets: How fast will their demand rise? How will it be met? And what impact will their energy choices have on the rest of the world?

Complementing the World Energy Outlook, the Energy Technology Perspective series focuses on the role of existing and new technologies in achieving a more secure and sustainable energy future. The latest edition, published in June 2008, answers the following questions:
  • What technological options do we have for reducing CO2 emissions over the next 50 years?
  • How much will it cost?
  • What policies do we need?
The analysis demonstrates that a global energy technology revolution will be necessary to achieve deep cuts in CO2 emissions. Although extremely challenging, it also shows that such a revolution is achievable. However, time is short and immediate policy action will be necessary if we are to rise to the challenge.
