Singapore-IEA Regional Training Programme on Sustainable Energy Policies in Smart Cities

The Energy Market Authority of Singapore (EMA) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) are pleased to announce a specialised online training programme on Energy Efficiency Policies for Smart and Sustainable ASEAN Cities from 7 to 10 September. This training is organised as part of the activities of the Singapore-IEA Regional Training Hub.  

The training programme aims to build capacity and bring together policy makers and professionals working in urban and transport planning, municipal services, and distributed energy resources in Southeast Asia, and to equip them with greater knowledge and skills to establish a pathway towards energy efficient, smart and sustainable city planning in their respective countries.

There is no attendance fee for this training programme. It will be delivered in English and therefore a good command of the language is essential for all participants. The online programme will offer a mix of lectures, interactive discussions and practical exercises which will allow participants to learn both from international best practices and from each other. 
 
The training will explore the multiple facets of enabling energy efficiency in Southeast Asian cities through smart technologies, policies and planning that meet local conditions and urban energy challenges. Once an overall picture of how the urban system consumes energy is obtained, participants will learn how it can be made more efficient through various clean energy policies and smart solutions, focusing on three main dimensions: spatial planning and transport, municipal services and distributed energy resources. 

The training will comprise three key modules:  

• Integrated spatial and transport planning will focus on strategically integrating urban transport and land-use planning, optimising the urban form and the location of services and housing, among others, to achieve low-carbon and efficiency goals as well as bring air quality, jobs and other benefits.  
• Smart and sustainable municipal services will encompass public lighting, water and wastewater utilities, and solid waste management, notably by management systems, strengthened by digital tools.  
• Distributed energy resources, as a broad category, will explore how the profile of rising energy demand in Southeast Asian cities can be matched with variable renewable energy sources and tapped further through efficiency measures and smart solutions including smart grids, smart EV charging and other demand flexibility mechanisms.
