Experts Group on Science for Energy (EGSE) - formerly known as AHGSET
There are a number of potential scientific breakthroughs that could provide solutions to our energy challenges, including innovations in technologies and instrumentation, computing, communications, biotechnology, nano-sciences, information technologies, and infrastructure. However, additional funding is critically needed to allow science and applied energy researchers to realize the full potential of these breakthroughs. There is also a gap between the basic science and energy technology communities that prevents scientists and researchers from taking advantage of available opportunities for collaboration, networking and accelerating necessary scientific advances.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) Expert Group on Science for Energy (EGSE), a recently created advisory body to the IEA’s Committee on Energy Research and Technology (CERT), is addressing these barriers by improving communication and networking between the basic science and applied energy research communities. EGSE held its first workshop and in-person meeting on 4-5 May, bringing together science and energy experts from across the world to discuss how to reinforce links between basic science and energy research through international information exchange, networking and outreach. As a result of the meeting, the EGSE has begun work on the following activities:
- Mapping science for energy efforts, with a focus on identifying the network of researchers working in relevant topics in all countries. This is the first priority for action for the EGSE
- Providing input into IEA’s Energy Technology Perspectives 2010 (ETP2010) publication; specifically with regard to technology breakthroughs in the roadmaps
- Linking science and energy research communities via future workshops and other networking events
- Communicating high-level messages regarding the necessary links between science and energy research, especially to the younger generation
- Exploring the possibility of IEA Awards and other outreach activities
