Transforming the Energy and CO2 Performance of Industry

At their 2005 Gleneagles Summit the G8 leaders asked the IEA to provide advice on a clean, clever and competitive energy future, including how to transform the energy performance of industry. In response, the IEA has worked closely with industrial stakeholders to analyse industrial energy use, efficiency and CO2 emissions. This has included constructing new indicators to track past performance and current potentials and developing scenarios to analyse the future impacts of technology related policies.

The results show that industrial energy efficiency has improved dramatically over the last 25 years. Yet important opportunities for additional gains remain. For instance, if heavy industry applied proven technologies and best practices everywhere today, energy use could be reduced by between 18% and 26% and CO2 emissions would decline by between 1.9 Gt and 3.2 Gt per year. The largest savings potentials can be found in the iron/steel, cement and chemicals and petrochemicals sectors. Looking to the future, the scenarios show that by developing and applying new technologies, including carbon-capture and storage, it is possible to return industrial CO2 emissions to below today’s levels by 2050, despite a doubling of industrial output.
